Port of Rotterdam Authority Announces Major Green‑Fuel Supply Chain Partnership and Infrastructure Expansion in the Fuel Sector
ROTTERDAM, NL – The Port of Rotterdam Authority is pleased to announce today a new milestone in its ambitions as Europe’s leading energy and fuels gateway. As part of its continuing commitment to supporting the transition to low‑carbon fuels, the Authority has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AM Green Ammonia Ltd., backed by the Greenko founders, to establish a large‑scale green‑fuel supply corridor linking India and Northwestern Europe via Rotterdam.
Under the agreement, the Port of Rotterdam will act as a central distribution hub for sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), green hydrogen‑derived fuels, and bunkering options for maritime and industrial users. The corridor is envisaged to handle up to 1 million tons per year of green fuels, representing a trade value of up to USD 1 billion between India and Europe. The partnership also includes the exploration of new terminal infrastructure, pipeline and bunkering facilities to support the safe handling and onward distribution of these low‑carbon fuels.
“The energy transition is advancing rapidly, and as Europe’s pre‑eminent energy port, Rotterdam must stay ahead of the curve,” said Boudewijn Siemons, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority. “By linking India’s abundant green‑hydrogen potential with Rotterdam’s advanced infrastructure and connectivity, we are shaping a robust supply‑chain for low‑carbon fuels and bunkering that meets the demand of tomorrow.”
In parallel, the Port is accelerating its infrastructure build‑out to support an evolving fuel‑industry landscape. Earlier this year, the Authority confirmed the start of a new production site for synthetic sustainable aviation fuel (e‑SAF) at the port, to be operated by Metafuels AG in collaboration with Evos Group. The facility is expected to significantly increase the availability of e‑SAF in Europe.
The strategic intent covers multiple fuel vectors: biofuels, synthetic fuels, green hydrogen‑derived feedstocks, bunkering services for maritime vessels, and terminal logistics enabling storage and distribution. The Port highlighted that crude‑oil imports declined slightly in 2024, while demand for refined fuel products such as kerosene and fuel oil rose. The Port remains committed to balancing traditional fuel flows while driving investment into cleaner alternatives.
The Port of Rotterdam Authority invites industry stakeholders, fuel traders, shipping companies, terminal operators and logistics partners to engage with the newly announced green‑fuel corridor and support infrastructure. With this initiative, Rotterdam reinforces its ambition to become Europe’s leading hub for the storage, import, bunkering and distribution of next‑generation fuels.
