Fuel Trader Magazine recently had the opportunity to speak with Laura Chen, Regional Director at Vopak Tank Storage, Houston, to learn how the company supports fuel traders and energy companies in Houston and other major seaports worldwide.

According to Chen, Vopak’s Houston facility is strategically located near the Houston Ship Channel, allowing seamless integration with incoming tankers, barges, and rail or truck transport. “We work closely with port authorities, pilots, and terminal operators to ensure fuel flows in and out efficiently. Every cubic meter is tracked and accounted for, giving traders confidence in availability and quality.”
Vopak provides a full suite of storage and logistics services. These include temperature-controlled storage, blending of different fuel grades, and metered transfers between storage tanks and delivery vessels or trucks. Chen explains that precision and segregation are vital: “For instance, ultra-low sulfur diesel and standard diesel cannot mix. Our systems, monitoring, and operational procedures prevent contamination and guarantee compliance with environmental and industry standards.”
Beyond operational support, Vopak offers inventory management and reporting tools that allow clients to monitor stock levels, movement, and quality in real-time. “Transparency is a major value-add for our customers,” says Chen. “It allows traders to optimize their supply chains, schedule deliveries, and reduce exposure to market fluctuations.”
